These few precepts unthy memory look thou character.

Estes poucos preceitos em tua memória observam teu caráter.

Give thy thoughts no tongue, nor any improportioned thought his act.

Não dê aos teus pensamentos língua alguma, nem a nenhum desproporcional pensamento seu ato.

Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.

Sejas familiar, mas de modo algum vulgar.

Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel.

Aqueles amigos que tiveres, e sua adoção provada prenda-os em tua alma com argolas de aço.

Beware of entrance to a quarrel but, being in, bear it that the opposed may beware of thee.

Evite entrada em querela mas, estando numa, suporte-a para que o oponente deva evitar a ti.

Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice.

Dê a todo homem teu ouvido, mas a poucos tua voz.

Costly thy habit as they purse can buy but not expressed in fancy. Rich, not gaudy.

Encareça teu hábito como tua bolsa puder comprar mas não expresso em pomposidade. Rico, não chamativo.

For the apparel oft proclaims the man.

Pelo traje frequentemente declara-se o homem.

Neither a borrower, nor a lender be. For loan oft loses both itself and friend and borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

Nem tome emprestado, nem empreste. Por empréstimos freqüentemente se perde ambos a si meso e ao amigo e tomar emprestado embota a margem de poupança.

This above all: to thine own self be true ant it must follow, as the night the day thou canst not then be false to any man.

Isto acima de tudo: a ti mesmo seja verdadeiro e isso deve seguir, como a noite o dia tu não podes então ser falso a homem algum.

Betwixt mine eye and heart a league is took, (a)< ?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Entre meu olho e coração uma aliança é formada,

And each doth good turns now unto the other. (b)

E cada benefício de um volta-se agora para o outro.

When that mine eye is famish'd for a look, (a)

Quando meu olho está faminto por um olhar,

Or heart in love with sighs himself doth smother, (b)

Ou o coração apaixonado com suspiros ele mesmo a ambos sufoca,

With my love's picture then my eye doth feast (c)

Com o retrato de meu amor então a ambos banqueteia

And to the painted banquet bids my heart. (d)

E para o banquete pintado meu coração convida.

Another time mine eye is my heart's guest, (c)

Outra vez meu olho é convidado de meu coração,

And in his thoughts of love doth share a part. (d)

E em seus pensamentos de amor ambos tomam uma parte.

So, either by thy picture or my love, (e)

Assim, tanto por teu retrato ou meu amor,

Thyself away [art] present still with me; (f)

Tu mesmo longe estás ainda presente comigo;

For thou [no] farther than my thoughts canst move, (f)

Pois tu não podes mover-te para mais longe que meus pensamentos

And I am still with them, and they with thee. (e)

E eu estou ainda com eles, e eles contigo.

Or, if they sleep, thy picture in my sight  (g)

Ou, se eles adormecem, teu retrato em minha visão

Awakes my heart to heart's and eye's delight. (g)
